JFWs Music Rules…

Casey Kasem died this week. I grew up listening to him every week listening to his “long distance dedications” or waiting to see who dropped in the countdown. For those of you born after 1980 he was a DJ that hosted the American Top 40 Hits. If you’re still lost, that was before iTunes, Spotify, and Pandora. Check it out on Wikipedia….

Anyhoo ~ It made me think about how music can be a hot topic at the gym. Everyone has an opinion and rarely agree what is the best choice on what to listen to during a WOD. For those of us that are old enough to remember, there was a time when the only acceptable workout music was “Physical” by Olivia Newton John and “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. For those of you not old enough, it was the 80’s. Look it up. It will most likely be on the same Wiki page I sent you to earlier…

Based on the fact that we can’t seem to get our music selections together, I thought I would share a few “Under no circumstances should you play this during a WOD” selections:

“I would do anything for love but I won’t do that” by Meat Loaf - I realize that technically Meat Loaf is Paleo but Rock Opera has no place in CrossFit. Also this is the line most commonly said to me by women and it gets old…

“Don’t Stop Believing" by Journey - Great Song but it makes the WOD feel like an episode of Glee but with weights and ball sweat. Also I’m required to play air guitar during the solo and it ruins my WOD time…

“Baby” by Justin Bieber - If I want my ass to hurt then I’ll do deadlifts. Don’t make it any worse…

“Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus - Who the hell wants to do Clean & Twerks?

“Talk Dirty” by Jason Derulo - This song has an insatiable beat and fun melody. Combine this song and booty shorts and I may hump your leg. Not a good idea…

Anything by Metallica - It’s just gets old and I’m way past having the desire or ability to grow a mullet…

“Sexy and I know it by LMFAO” - Two words: Over Played. Yeah yeah I know. Someone made a CrossFit version and yes I know the song talks about working out and is a little funny. It’s still a terrible song. Plus my kid danced to this on “Dance Party 4” once and I’m still mentally scarred from the “wiggle wiggle wiggle” move she was doing…

That’s my short list. I’m sure there are others. Feel free to let me know your thoughts and we will add them to the list…
