JFW gets his groove back

So a friend of mine gave me a free pass and I tried my first spin class. I didn’t really know what to expect going in. I’ve seen that sh*t on TV and as a CrossFitter was like “How hard can it be?”. That comment gets me in trouble 99% of the time...

So the place these bikes are attached to a local fitness joint called GrooveRyde. They offer several fitness options and have something for everyone. They have boxing that they call “Beat Box”, Dancing that they call “Pure Mvmnt” and “Buti Yoga” which is like regular yoga but with extra Buti I guess...

My class was called Groove Cycle. Getting set up was pretty uneventful. It only took a couple of minutes to get my bike set up and ready but when I saw the instructor strapping on the Janet Jackson “Rhythm Nation” headset I knew I was screwed. Nothing good ever comes from a chick with a headset and a pair of lungs.

1, 2, 3, go and we started pedaling like we were being chased by someone. I was really happy my friend had reserved a front row bike for me so all these chicks could see how unfit I am. I was huffing like a fat asthmatic kid chasing an ice cream truck in like 30 seconds. At the same time there was a 80 pound teenage girl next to me moving so fast you could barely see her feet so that wasn’t humbling at all. Here is where the fun kicks in. Janet Jackson on the mic yell “We are gonna do some tapbacks!” Now if you don’t know what a “tapback” is let me explain it to you. A “tapback" is where you pedal really fast while standing and (I suppose) as gently and quickly as you can, tap your ass on the seat. Now I am not super coordinated and this is my first time spinning. Also the seats are not super comfortable and kind of long. The sensation a guy gets doing “tapbacks" can only be described as what I imagine the first night of prison feels like. I don’t want to exaggerate here but that bike got to third base and didn’t even buy me a drink first. I think they are called “tapbacks” cause I tapped my balls back into my body cavity. You get the picture...

At one point we pulled out some 1# dumbbells and did curls and presses so that was exciting. I didn’t know I was gonna get to put on a gunshow for the ladies and I am sure they thought it was spintastic. We then wrapped up with two 45 second cycles of sprinting but I am pretty sure Janet’s clock was broken cause that sh*t felt like it took forever. All in all I was a sweaty mess when it was over and felt like a million pesos.

Jokes aside, I’ve told myself that I am going to try new things and get out of my comfort zone. This class certainly did that. I think I would need to try it a few more times to get the hang of it and really understand how to get the maximum benefit but overall the instructor was fantastic and it was fun. I think I will try “Beat Box” next because it sound like I could release some aggression and I don’t think I could ask to do “Buti Yoga” with a straight face...
